Building Creative Connections: A Cultural Journey to The Gambia

Earlier in 2025, communiTree’s own Jude embarked on a meaningful cultural exchange to The Gambia, working alongside local artists and communities to explore the power of creativity and connection through the performing arts.

Supported by Arts Council England, the trip focused on building partnerships and sharing artistic experiences. Jude collaborated with renowned kora harpist Ansumana Suso, celebrated percussionist Musa Mboob, and the wonderful team at Afrikaya Nursery School in New Yundum. From the rhythmic pulse of traditional drumming to the delicate sounds of the kora, the experience brought people together through the joy of music and movement.

A Meeting of Music and Culture

Throughout the visit, Jude joined in workshops and performances that highlighted the beauty and depth of Gambian culture. Children, teachers, and community members shared stories through song and dance, celebrating the traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Creating a Lasting Legacy

This cultural exchange marks the beginning of an ongoing relationship between CommuniTree and the communities in New Yundum. The connections made during the trip will continue to grow, with plans for collaborative projects, workshops, and opportunities for children and young people to explore the arts further.

We are also thrilled to share that Ansumana Suso will be performing at CommuniTree Festival 2025, bringing the captivating sounds of the kora to Nottingham. His music will offer a glimpse into the traditions and stories of The Gambia, enriching the festival with the spirit of cultural exchange.

Looking Forward

This experience has reaffirmed our belief in the power of the arts to build bridges between communities, spark joy, and inspire meaningful change. We’re incredibly grateful to Arts Council England for their support in making this journey possible.

As we continue to strengthen these connections, we look forward to sharing more stories, music, and collaborative projects that celebrate the beauty of cultural exchange.

Stay tuned for updates on our future events and workshops — and mark your calendars for CommuniTree Festival 2025, where the sounds of The Gambia will take centre stage!

Here’s to creativity, connection, and the rhythms that bring us together.
